Character.AI documents character definitions and a Chat Memories field, but “memory” should not be interpreted as complete, permanent, or human-like recollection. Test what the current product stores, retrieves, forgets, and exposes before sharing personal information.
The earlier version of this page used Wikipedia as its main source, froze an old subscription price, inferred proprietary architecture, generalized user demographics and emotional effects, and summarized litigation and policy changes too broadly. Those claims have been removed.
What is documented
Character.AI describes itself in its Safety Center as an interactive entertainment platform for stories, roleplay, and user-created Characters.
Its character-definition guide explains that creators can specify personality, backstory, speaking style, behavior, and dialogue examples. That definition shapes a character; it is not evidence that the system forms a stable identity or relationship.
A May 2025 product update describes Chat Memories as a user-editable field for fixed information. Recheck the current interface and help center because limits and availability can change.
Test memory behavior
Create a synthetic character and use fictional details. Record the product version, account age experience, device, date, and settings.
Test four cases:
- Put one fact only in the character definition.
- Put a different fact only in Chat Memories.
- Mention a third fact only in conversation.
- Correct or delete each fact.
Across new and long conversations, record whether the system retrieves the fact, confuses it, over-applies it, forgets it, or continues to use it after correction. Repeat the test; one successful recall does not establish reliable memory.
Separate memory layers
Users should distinguish:
- creator-written character instructions;
- user-written fixed memory;
- recent conversation context;
- server-side conversation history;
- inferred personalization;
- exported, deleted, or retained account data.
The interface may not expose how every layer works. Use the current privacy policy and support material for data questions, and do not infer internal architecture from conversational behavior.
Safety and age experience
Character.AI’s October 2025 teen update says open-ended chat was removed from the under-18 experience. The current Reading Mode help page describes what verified under-18 users can access.
These are provider statements and can change by country or rollout. Parents and users should check current age-assurance, privacy, reporting, blocking, and content controls in the actual account.
Practical boundaries
- Treat every character as generated software, not a person or professional.
- Do not rely on it for medical, legal, financial, crisis, or safety decisions.
- Avoid sharing identity documents, precise location, private third-party information, or confidential records.
- Test deletion and account controls before sustained use.
- Use reporting and blocking tools for harmful content.
- Seek human help when a conversation increases distress, isolation, coercion, or dependence.
In an immediate crisis, contact local emergency services or a qualified crisis resource rather than a chatbot.
Evaluate a character responsibly
For a creative-writing or roleplay use case, review:
