Confluence Agents with Rovo MCP: External Agent Guide
On this page
Quick answer
Atlassian Rovo MCP lets supported external clients work with live Atlassian context instead of an exported copy. Atlassian’s Confluence launch names clients such as Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, and IDEs, while the current developer tool catalog includes Confluence read, search, create, update, comment, label, status, whiteboard, database, export, archive, and move operations.
That is a powerful integration surface, not a single permission. Bind the exact user, external client, model, Atlassian site, spaces, tools, destinations, approval rules, and recovery path.
The external-agent control path
human or service identity
-> external AI client and model
-> Rovo MCP authentication
-> Atlassian site and product access
-> caller-visible Confluence context
-> selected MCP tools and arguments
-> live content write or external export
-> review, version evidence, audit, and recovery
Approve each arrow separately. A successful sign-in does not prove that the model may receive the content, that the agent may write, or that the result may be published.
Preview lifecycle matters
Atlassian’s August 2026 launch says all Atlassian Cloud customers can use the Rovo MCP Server and that MCP actions run on a preview endpoint until MCP 2.0. Agentic Confluence workflows powered by Rovo are listed for Standard, Premium, and Enterprise Cloud plans.
Before rollout, record:
- exact plan, tenant, region, endpoint, protocol version, and release status;
- external client, extension or CLI version, model, publisher, and support path;
- authentication flow, token holder, expiry, revocation, scopes, and service-account policy;
- enabled tools, schemas, confirmation behavior, rate limits, logs, and failure modes;
- preview change policy, migration plan, and stop condition.
Do not turn a launch example into a guarantee that every client or account configuration is supported.
Minimize the tool surface
| Workflow | Minimum useful starting tools | Keep disabled until justified |
|---|---|---|
| Find a current policy page | Search and read | Create, update, archive, export, move |
| Draft an update for review | Search, read, and a non-publishing draft path | Direct publish, external share, archive |
| Add a reviewed comment | Read and create comment | Page update, status, export, bulk actions |
| Maintain a controlled database | Read and bounded database update | Space-wide search, archive, move, public link |
The developer catalog can change. Re-read the current tool documentation rather than relying on a remembered operation name or schema.
Data and destination review
Rovo MCP sits between Atlassian and another agent surface. Confirm what content leaves Atlassian, which provider processes it, where prompts and tool results are logged, whether data is retained or used for training, and which subprocessors and regions apply.
Also inspect downstream actions. An external agent may combine Confluence context with shell, browser, code, email, or another MCP server. Confluence read access should not silently expand authority in those systems.
For caller permissions, stale-write handling, and version recovery, use the permissions and version-history guide.
Minimum pilot
- Start with a read-only question whose answer and permitted sources are known.
- Test a restricted page, inherited permission, removed group, stale token, and unavailable endpoint.
- Add one reversible write in a non-production space with explicit user approval.
- Verify actor attribution, changed content, version history, analytics, and audit evidence.
- Revoke access and confirm the external client can no longer read or write.
- Restore the prior content and document the full recovery time.
Frequently asked questions
What does Atlassian Rovo MCP let an external agent do in Confluence?
Atlassian documents read, search, create, update, comment, label, status, whiteboard, database, and other Confluence operations in its current MCP tool surface. Verify the live tool list and grant only the operations the workflow needs.
Is the Confluence MCP write surface generally available?
Atlassian’s August 2026 launch says MCP actions use the preview endpoint until MCP 2.0. Treat the exact endpoint, schema, lifecycle, and support level as changeable.
Does Rovo MCP give an agent more access than the caller?
Atlassian says Confluence agents do not surface content the invoking person could not already see. Still test the exact client, identity, inherited permissions, connected sources, and denied-content cases.
Does connecting Rovo MCP authorize every external-agent action?
No. Authentication, data access, tool availability, write permission, business approval, publication, and recovery are separate decisions.
