How to Use ChatGPT Health: Connect Records & Apple Health

Quick Start

To use ChatGPT Health on an eligible account:

  1. Open Health in the ChatGPT sidebar, or choose More > Get started.
  2. Ask a health question without connecting data, or choose a supported connection.
  3. Connect Apple Health, a supported U.S. hospital record, One Medical, or Function Health.
  4. Wait a few minutes for sync if needed.
  5. Review conditions, medications, family history, dates, and results against the original source.
  6. When ChatGPT asks to use connected data, choose Allow once or Always allow.
  7. Type @Health when you want to explicitly include connected Health data.

ChatGPT Health supports—not replaces—professional care. Use it to organize and understand information, not as the only source for diagnosis, urgent symptoms, medication changes, or treatment.

Before connecting, read the companion ChatGPT Health privacy guide. It explains training, ads, permissions, memory, conversation history, disconnection, and the 30-day source-data deletion window.

Source check: The workflow below was checked against OpenAI’s official Health launch announcement and release notes on July 30, 2026. Labels and availability can change, so use the current signed-in interface as the final product truth.

Step 1: Confirm That Your Account Is Eligible

At the July 23, 2026 launch, OpenAI announced Health for:

RequirementLaunch availability
CountryUnited States
Age18 and older
AccountLogged in
PlansFree, Go, Plus, and Pro
PlatformsChatGPT web and iOS
CodexNot yet available

If the Health entry is missing, check the correct account, region, age eligibility, supported platform, app version, and current OpenAI release notes. Do not assume that a menu shown in another user’s screenshot is available to every region or account.

Step 2: Decide Whether You Need a Connection

OpenAI says you can use Health without connecting any data. Start by stating the task and the minimum information needed.

TaskConnection may helpConnection may be unnecessary
Prepare questions from a long recordWhen the supported record contains the relevant historyWhen you already have a short, verified summary
Compare recent results with prior testsWhen dates and results are available in the connected sourceWhen you can provide the exact verified values
Understand a general health termRarelyA general question is usually enough
Review activity or sleep trendsWhen the required data is in Apple HealthWhen the source app has a clearer report

Connecting more data is not automatically better. A narrow question with verified context is easier to review than a broad request over an incomplete record.

Step 3: Prepare the Source

Before connecting, open the original provider portal, Apple Health, or source app and confirm:

  • your name and account are correct;
  • the relevant provider or source is supported;
  • medications and conditions are current;
  • dates, units, and result ranges are visible;
  • duplicate or outdated entries are understood;
  • wearable or nutrition apps are already sharing the intended data with Apple Health.

OpenAI notes that connected data can be incomplete or out of date. Treat the source portal or source app—not the ChatGPT summary—as the place to correct errors.

For wearable, fitness, sleep, or nutrition data, the path is often:

Source app or device > Apple Health > ChatGPT Health

Only information that the source writes to Apple Health and the user permits can be available through that route. A proprietary readiness score or app-only interpretation may not transfer even if its underlying measurements do.

Step 4: Open Health

On a supported account:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT on web or iOS.
  2. Select Health in the sidebar.
  3. If it is not in the sidebar, open More and select Get started.
  4. Read the setup explanation and privacy controls shown for the current account.

Health is designed as a separate home for recent health data and trends, synced records, past Health conversations, and connected accounts.

Step 5: Connect a Supported Source

Choose the connection that owns the information needed for the task. At launch, OpenAI listed:

  • Apple Health;
  • supported medical records from U.S. hospital systems;
  • One Medical;
  • Function Health.

Follow the source sign-in and authorization screens. Read which account and information are being connected before approving. Do not connect another person’s record through your account.

Sync may take a few minutes. Avoid repeatedly reconnecting while the first sync is still processing.

Step 6: Review the Synced Information

After sync, verify the information before asking ChatGPT to reason over it:

  1. Compare patient identity and source account.
  2. Check medication names, doses, and status.
  3. Check conditions and family history.
  4. Compare lab dates, values, units, and reference ranges.
  5. Look for missing providers, duplicate results, or old entries.
  6. Confirm that Apple Health has the date range and data type you expected.

If a field is missing or wrong, return to the original source. Tell ChatGPT about known gaps when asking a question. A useful prompt can say: “Use the connected results from April through July, but do not assume my medication list is current. List every date and unit you rely on.”

Step 7: Choose the Permission

OpenAI says ChatGPT asks before using connected medical records or Apple Health data in a conversation.

  • Choose Allow once when you want to approve the current request only.
  • Choose Always allow when recurring use is intentional and you accept future access without the same prompt each time.
  • Type @Health to explicitly include connected Health data in a request.

OpenAI points users to Settings > Plugins > Health to change the permission later.

For a first use, one-time permission makes the data boundary easier to observe. Read the prompt before approving; it is the best place to confirm what the current request wants to access.

Step 8: Ask a Reviewable Question

Use prompts that produce an auditable answer. State the source, time range, task, and limits. Ask for dates and values rather than a confident conclusion.

Examples:

  • “Using @Health, list changes between my two most recent copies of this result. Include dates, values, units, and any missing context. Do not diagnose.”
  • “Summarize changes since my last appointment as a timeline I can verify against the provider portal.”
  • “Help me prepare five questions for my clinician based on these records. Separate record facts from questions or inferences.”
  • “Review my last four weeks of available sleep and activity data. Identify data gaps before describing patterns.”
  • “Explain these terms in plain language, then list what the record does not establish.”

Ask ChatGPT to cite the date and source record for each important statement. Then compare the output with the original record. A polished answer is not proof that the underlying data is complete.

Step 9: Manage Memory and Conversation History

OpenAI says ChatGPT can create memories from Health conversations, though not directly from connected medical records or Apple Health data. Information discussed in the conversation may still interact with memory controls.

Before a sensitive or one-off task:

  • use Temporary Chat, or
  • turn memory off;
  • review saved memories afterward;
  • delete the conversation if you do not want it retained in history.

Connected-source permission, memory, conversation history, and the account’s standard Data Controls are separate settings. Review each one for the intended workflow.

Step 10: Disconnect When You Are Done

Open Health > Accounts and disconnect the source.

OpenAI says synced source data is deleted from its systems within 30 days after disconnection. Data already included in a conversation remains in conversation history until that conversation is deleted.

Use this cleanup checklist:

  1. Confirm the source shows disconnected.
  2. Review Settings > Plugins > Health for remaining permission.
  3. Delete Health conversations you no longer want in history.
  4. Review saved memories.
  5. Revoke source-side access too, if the provider or Apple setting offers its own connected-app control.

Do not describe disconnection as immediate deletion of every copy. The official statement distinguishes synced source data from conversation content and allows up to 30 days for source-data deletion.

Troubleshooting

Health Does Not Appear

Check launch eligibility, the signed-in account, platform, region, age, app version, and current release notes. OpenAI said Health was not yet available in Codex at launch.

The Source Will Not Connect

Confirm that the provider or account is supported, sign in directly to the source to resolve alerts, and retry once. Avoid entering provider credentials anywhere except the expected provider or OpenAI authorization flow.

Sync Is Still Processing

OpenAI says sync may take a few minutes. Wait, then reopen Health and inspect Accounts. If it remains incomplete, compare the supported source and the current official help or release information.

Apple Health Data Is Missing

Open the source app and Apple Health. Confirm that the source app writes the intended data type to Apple Health and that the relevant sharing permission is enabled. Remember that proprietary scores may remain in the source app.

A Record Is Wrong or Out of Date

Correct or confirm it with the provider or source application. Tell ChatGPT which field is unreliable and exclude it from important reasoning. ChatGPT cannot repair the authoritative medical record.

ChatGPT Did Not Use the Connection

Use @Health in the Health conversation or review the prompt and Settings > Plugins > Health permission. Do not infer that a response used connected data merely because it discussed health.

What ChatGPT Health Is Good For

OpenAI presents Health as a tool for understanding information, noticing trends, and preparing for care. Reviewable tasks include:

  • comparing a new result with earlier tests;
  • summarizing changes since an appointment;
  • organizing questions for a clinician;
  • exploring sleep, activity, or workout routines;
  • translating complex record language into plain language;
  • locating gaps or conflicting entries that need verification.

The safest output is a structured aid for human review: a timeline, checklist, list of questions, or source-linked summary.

What Not to Delegate

Do not rely on ChatGPT alone to:

  • diagnose a condition;
  • decide whether a symptom is an emergency;
  • start, stop, or change medication;
  • replace a clinician’s examination;
  • resolve a conflict between records without source verification;
  • make a high-impact decision from incomplete wearable data.

ChatGPT can make mistakes. For urgent or severe symptoms, contact local emergency services or a qualified medical professional immediately.

FAQ

Do I need to connect records to use ChatGPT Health?

No. OpenAI says you can ask health questions without connecting medical records or Apple Health. Connect only when the source data is necessary for the task.

How long does syncing take?

OpenAI says it may take a few minutes. After sync, compare the result with the original source because connected information can be incomplete or out of date.

How do I make ChatGPT use the connected data?

Approve the permission prompt for one-time or ongoing access, or type @Health in a Health conversation. Review the permission later under Settings > Plugins > Health.

Can ChatGPT read data from my wearable?

It may receive supported information through Apple Health when the source app writes that information to Apple Health and the user enables sharing. Available data varies, and proprietary app scores may not transfer.

Is ChatGPT Health available in Codex?

OpenAI said it was not yet available in Codex at the July 23, 2026 launch. Check current release notes for later changes.

Bottom Line

Use the smallest data scope that solves one clearly defined task. Verify the sync against the original source, prefer a reviewable one-time permission for initial use, ask for dated evidence, and clean up permissions, sources, memories, and conversations separately.
