Google’s support record also describes processing temporary device identifiers, timestamps, and Fast Pair information for the network. Google says a participating phone’s contribution is designed so the company cannot identify that phone’s user from the detected-item report. That is a product claim with implementation and account boundaries—not a promise that an item’s use creates no data or risk.
Choose the Right Find Hub Network Mode
Android exposes several offline-finding choices. Labels can vary by Android version or rollout, so verify the current wording on the actual phone.
Off
Turning the Find Hub network off disables offline finding and stops the phone from participating in that network. An online device may still be findable. Choose this when network participation is not acceptable, but test the reduced recovery path before relying on the tag.
Without network
This mode keeps recent encrypted locations from the owner’s own device and connected accessories, without using the wider crowdsourced network. Google says it does not support finding tracker tags through the broader network, so it is usually a poor fit if distant Pixel Tag recovery is the main job.
With network in busy places only
Google describes this mode as aggregating observations from multiple nearby Android devices before helping locate an item. It can reduce reliance on one contributor but may return fewer or slower observations in quiet places.
With network everywhere
This mode can use a single participating device’s observation and may help sooner in low-traffic places. It expands the conditions under which the network may return an item’s location. Decide whether that recovery benefit matches the item, household, and organization policy.
Screen Lock and Encryption Boundary
Google ties the Find Hub encryption key to the Android device’s PIN, pattern, or password. A supported screen lock is therefore part of the privacy control, not merely a convenience setting. Google says that without a screen lock, a phone can still help the network find other people’s items and store encrypted recent locations, but the owner cannot use the network’s fullest offline-finding capability for their own devices.
Before deployment:
- Set a strong screen lock on the owner’s Android device.
- Confirm the intended Google account owns the Pixel Tag.
- Open Find Hub and verify the selected network mode.
- Test a nearby ring and an offline observation using a non-sensitive item.
- Record how to revoke shared users, disable links, remove the tag, and delete locations.
Sharing Is the Main Human Access Decision
End-to-end encryption limits who can decrypt a location; sharing changes that set of people. Give access only to someone who needs to find the same item, and use a named item such as “front-door keys” rather than a person-centered label.
For a household or team, maintain a small access record:
- item and owner account;
- approved users and purpose;
- any active link and its expiry or review date;
- consent or policy basis;
- date access was removed;
- response owner for an unknown-tracker alert.
Do not use a shared tracker to infer consent to monitor a person, employee, renter, customer, or vehicle occupant. Product access and lawful, ethical authority are separate questions.
How to Reduce or Remove Location Exposure
Use a change log rather than assuming one toggle clears everything.

Run this test before using Pixel Tag on a real shared item:
- The correct owner account can see and ring the tag.
- An unapproved account cannot access it.
- An approved user can be added and removed, and loss of access is verified.
- The selected offline-finding mode survives a restart and matches written policy.
- The owner can identify and close every active share link.
- The team knows who handles an unwanted-tracking alert and where the evidence record goes.
