Independent read-write Sheet gate

Google Sheets Canvas Readiness

Describe one source tab, its plan and access, data contract, generated interface, edit authority, sharing, calculations, validation, and recovery. Generate a checklist without connecting to Google Drive or treating a visual mini-app as proof of correct data.

Four readiness gates

Gate 1

Access and source

Record account, plan, admin policy, rollout, web and English access, smart features, Google Drive file, source tab, size, usage limit, owner, purpose, and recovery point.

Gate 2

Data contract

Define row identity, column types, valid values, formulas, protected fields, sources, freshness, missing data, duplicates, calculations, expected totals, and approved outputs.

Gate 3

Interface and authority

Specify views, filters, cards, metrics, allowed add/edit/delete actions, prohibited fields, prompts, empty and error states, accessibility, users, groups, links, and roles.

Gate 4

Validation and lifecycle

Test round-trip sync, permissions, protections, concurrent edits, invalid inputs, Gemini inaccuracies, usage exhaustion, large data, deletion, version recovery, ownership, and periodic review.

Classify the canvas

Ready for read-only review

The source tab, metrics, filters, labels, roles, and expected totals are defined, and users can inspect the underlying data without operational mutation.

Ready for bounded editing

Only approved fields are editable; identifiers, formulas, and approvals are protected; role and concurrency tests pass; version recovery and an owner are in place.

Keep in grid view

The file, tab size, plan, language, storage, permissions, calculations, data contract, usage, or recovery path does not support a reliable read-write canvas.

Minimum acceptance evidence

Reconcile source row count, calculations, filters, totals, labels, and scenarios; test add, edit, delete, drag, invalid values, missing and duplicate keys, concurrent edits, viewer/commenter/editor roles, protected ranges, link sharing, usage exhaustion, source-tab changes, large data, canvas deletion, and version-history recovery. Repeat after every structural prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

It creates a checklist from the account, source tab, data contract, interface, permissions, mutations, validation, and recovery facts you provide. It does not access Google Drive, inspect a Sheet, create a canvas, or validate calculations.
Yes. Google says editors can add, edit, or delete spreadsheet data directly through the canvas, with changes synchronized to the source tab.
No. Google currently says each canvas uses data from one Sheet tab. Use a governed summary tab only when lineage, freshness, and reconciliation are preserved.
No. Canvas access follows the spreadsheet. Review users, groups, domain and link sharing, external collaborators, and viewer, commenter, or editor roles.
No. Reconcile source rows, formulas, totals, filters, scenarios, and labels with an approved oracle, and repeat tests after Gemini changes the interface.
