About This FAQ
This FAQ addresses the most common questions about Fotor’s features and capabilities. Whether you’re evaluating the platform for the first time, troubleshooting a specific feature, or trying to understand licensing for commercial use, these answers are based on official documentation and hands-on testing.
Questions are organized into seven categories: General Platform, AI Image Generation, HDR Enhancement, Batch Processing, Commercial Licensing, Design Features, and Troubleshooting.
General Platform Questions
What is Fotor?
Fotor (fotor.com) is an online photo editing and graphic design platform that combines traditional editing tools with AI-powered features. It serves as both a photo editor (enhancing, retouching, and transforming existing photos) and a design platform (creating marketing materials, social media content, and other visual assets from templates).
The platform is browser-based — no software download required — though desktop and mobile apps are also available for offline access.
What are Fotor’s main AI features?
Fotor offers several AI-powered capabilities:
- AI Photo Enhancer: One-click optimization of brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness with context-aware processing
- AI Background Remover: Automatic subject isolation with edge-aware detection for hair, transparency, and complex boundaries
- AI Object Remover: Remove unwanted elements from photos with intelligent background reconstruction
- AI Portrait Retouching: Automated skin smoothing, blemish removal, teeth whitening, and eye enhancement
- HDR Enhancement: AI-powered dynamic range expansion for balanced exposure in high-contrast scenes
- AI Image Enlarger: Upscale images up to 4x with detail enhancement using super-resolution technology
- AI Image Generator (Pro+ only): Text-to-image generation for creating original images from descriptions
- AI Collage: Automatic layout suggestions for photo collages based on image content and count
What platforms does Fotor support?
- Web browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge (no installation required)
- Desktop apps: Windows and macOS
- Mobile apps: iOS and Android
- Browser extension: Chrome extension for quick edits
All platforms sync through your Fotor account, so projects started on one device can be continued on another.
Is Fotor suitable for beginners?
Yes. Fotor is specifically designed for users without professional design or photo editing experience. The AI features work with one-click operations — no knowledge of curves, layers, masks, or other advanced concepts required. The design templates provide ready-to-use layouts that only need text and image customization.
That said, Fotor also provides manual adjustment tools for users who want more control, so it scales with growing skill levels.
AI Image Generation Questions
What is Fotor’s AI Image Generator?
Fotor’s AI Image Generator is a text-to-image tool that creates original images from text descriptions (prompts). Available on the Pro+ plan, it produces images based on your written description of what you want to see.
Example prompts:
- “A modern minimalist office space with natural light and green plants”
- “A flat lay photograph of coffee, a notebook, and autumn leaves on a wooden table”
- “An abstract geometric pattern in blue and gold for a business presentation background”
How does the credit system work for AI generation?
Pro+ subscribers receive 100 AI generation credits per month. Each credit generates one image. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over to the next month.
| Action | Credits Used |
|---|---|
| Standard resolution generation | 1 credit |
| High resolution generation | 2 credits |
| Image variation (based on existing image) | 1 credit |
What image sizes and resolutions are available?
AI-generated images are available in several aspect ratios and resolutions:
| Aspect Ratio | Standard Resolution | High Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 (Square) | 1024 × 1024 | 2048 × 2048 |
| 16:9 (Landscape) | 1792 × 1024 | 2048 × 1152 |
| 9:16 (Portrait) | 1024 × 1792 | 1152 × 2048 |
| 4:3 | 1365 × 1024 | 2048 × 1536 |
| 3:4 | 1024 × 1365 | 1536 × 2048 |
High-resolution generation uses 2 credits instead of 1.
How does Fotor’s AI generation compare to Midjourney or DALL-E?
Fotor’s AI image generation is designed for practical use cases (marketing visuals, social media content, design elements) rather than artistic expression. Honest comparison:
- Quality: Good for standard use cases; doesn’t match Midjourney v7 for artistic quality or DALL-E 3 for prompt accuracy
- Speed: Comparable (10-30 seconds per generation)
- Ease of use: Simpler interface than Midjourney (no Discord required)
- Integration: Generated images can be immediately edited and used in Fotor’s design tools — the biggest workflow advantage
- Cost efficiency: Included with Pro+ subscription; no separate subscription needed
Best for: Users who need occasional AI-generated images as part of a broader photo editing and design workflow. Not ideal for: Users whose primary need is high-quality AI art generation.
Can I use AI-generated images commercially?
Yes. Images generated through Fotor’s AI Image Generator are licensed for commercial use under the Pro+ plan. This includes:
- Social media content
- Marketing materials
- Website imagery
- Product packaging design elements
- E-commerce listing imagery
- Print marketing materials
See the Commercial Licensing section below for full details.
HDR Enhancement Questions
What is HDR Enhancement in Fotor?
HDR (High Dynamic Range) Enhancement is an AI feature that expands the tonal range of photos, recovering detail in both shadows and highlights. It’s particularly useful for scenes where bright and dark areas coexist — such as interior rooms with bright windows, outdoor scenes with deep shadows, and architectural photography with mixed lighting.
How does Fotor’s HDR differ from camera HDR?
Camera HDR combines multiple exposures (taken in rapid succession) to create a single image with extended dynamic range. This requires the camera to capture multiple shots, which can introduce motion artifacts.
Fotor’s AI HDR works on a single photo. The AI analyzes the image and intelligently boosts shadow detail while controlling highlight brightness — simulating the effect of multi-exposure HDR from a single capture. This means you can apply HDR enhancement to any photo, including older photos that weren’t shot in HDR mode.
What types of photos benefit most from HDR?
| Photo Type | HDR Impact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Real estate interiors | ★★★★★ | Balances bright windows with dark room interiors |
| Landscape with sky | ★★★★★ | Preserves sky detail while brightening foreground |
| Backlit portraits | ★★★★☆ | Recovers subject detail against bright backgrounds |
| Architectural exteriors | ★★★★☆ | Balances building shadows with sky exposure |
| Product photos (mixed lighting) | ★★★☆☆ | Moderate improvement in lighting consistency |
| Well-lit studio photos | ★★☆☆☆ | Minimal benefit — already well-exposed |
Can I adjust the HDR intensity?
Yes. After applying HDR enhancement, a slider allows you to adjust the intensity from subtle (slight shadow recovery) to dramatic (maximum dynamic range expansion). The default setting is typically appropriate for most photos, but the slider provides creative control.
Does HDR processing affect file size?
HDR processing doesn’t significantly change file size. The output resolution matches the input resolution. The processing adds tonal information within the existing pixel structure rather than adding new pixels.
Batch Processing Questions
What is batch processing in Fotor?
Batch processing allows you to apply the same editing operations to multiple images simultaneously, rather than editing each image individually. This is essential for workflows involving large numbers of similar images (product photography, event photos, real estate listings).
What operations can be batched?
| Operation | Free | Pro | Pro+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batch resize | — | ✓ (50 images) | ✓ (500 images) |
| Batch AI enhancement | — | ✓ (50 images) | ✓ (500 images) |
| Batch background removal | — | ✓ (50 images) | ✓ (500 images) |
| Batch format conversion | — | ✓ (50 images) | ✓ (500 images) |
| Batch watermark | — | ✓ (50 images) | ✓ (500 images) |
| Batch filter application | — | ✓ (50 images) | ✓ (500 images) |
What’s the maximum batch size?
- Pro plan: Up to 50 images per batch
- Pro+ plan: Up to 500 images per batch
For operations exceeding these limits, you can run multiple batches sequentially. There’s no limit on the total number of batches per day.
How long does batch processing take?
Processing time depends on the operation and number of images:
| Operation | Time per Image | 50 Images | 500 Images |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resize | ~1 second | ~50 seconds | ~8 minutes |
| AI Enhancement | ~3-5 seconds | ~2-4 minutes | ~25-40 minutes |
| Background Removal | ~5-8 seconds | ~4-7 minutes | ~40-65 minutes |
| Format Conversion | ~1 second | ~50 seconds | ~8 minutes |
| Filter Application | ~2 seconds | ~2 minutes | ~17 minutes |
Pro+ users with priority processing typically see 20-30% faster processing times.
Can I preview batch results before committing?
Yes. After configuring your batch settings, Fotor shows a preview of the first 3-5 images with the applied operations. You can adjust settings based on the preview before processing the full batch. This prevents wasted time from processing an entire batch with incorrect settings.
Do batch operations consume additional credits?
No. Batch processing is based on your plan limits (50 or 500 images), not on a credit system. Once you’ve confirmed your plan allows the batch size, there are no per-image charges for standard operations.
The exception is AI Image Generation, which uses credits per generation and cannot be batched.
Commercial Licensing Questions
Can I use Fotor-edited photos commercially?
Yes, with your own photos. If you edit your own photos (or photos you have rights to) using Fotor’s tools, the edited versions are fully yours. Fotor’s editing tools don’t create any licensing restrictions on photos you own.
This applies to:
- AI-enhanced photos
- Background-removed images
- Retouched portraits
- HDR-processed images
- Any other edits applied to your own photos
What about using Fotor’s stock images and templates commercially?
Fotor’s stock images and templates are licensed for commercial use under paid plans (Pro and Pro+), with the following conditions:
Permitted uses:
- Social media marketing and advertising
- Website and blog content
- Marketing materials (brochures, flyers, banners)
- Product packaging design

Are AI-generated images commercially licensed?
Yes. AI-generated images created through Fotor’s AI Image Generator (Pro+ plan) are licensed for the same commercial uses as stock images. You can use them in marketing materials, social media, websites, and other commercial contexts.
Important note: AI-generated images that closely resemble existing copyrighted works, trademarks, or recognizable individuals may still carry legal risk regardless of the platform’s license. Use AI-generated images responsibly and review output for potential similarity issues.
Do I need to credit Fotor?
No. Paid plan users (Pro and Pro+) are not required to credit or attribute Fotor when using edited photos, stock images, templates, or AI-generated images commercially. Free plan exports include a Fotor watermark, which serves as implicit attribution.
Can I use Fotor for client work?
Yes. Designers, agencies, and freelancers can use Fotor to create deliverables for clients. The commercial license extends to work produced for third parties. However, the license is tied to the Fotor account — each team member who uses Fotor needs their own subscription.
Design Feature Questions

Yes. All paid plans support exporting images with transparent backgrounds in PNG format. This is essential for logos, product images, and design elements that will be placed on different backgrounds.
Can I create animated designs?
Fotor currently focuses on static image editing and design. Animated designs (GIFs, animated social media posts) are not supported. For animated content, you’d need a complementary tool like Canva or Adobe Express.
Troubleshooting Questions
The AI enhancement changed my photo’s colors. How do I fix this?
AI enhancement occasionally shifts colors, especially in photos with unusual lighting. Solutions:
- Adjust intensity: Reduce the enhancement slider to get a more subtle adjustment
- Manual color correction: After AI enhancement, use the manual color adjustment tools (saturation, hue, temperature) to correct any shifts
- Selective application: Apply enhancement to specific areas rather than the whole image using the selective editing tools
Background removal left artifacts around edges. What should I do?
For imperfect edges after background removal:
- Use the edge refinement tool: Zoom in and use the manual eraser/restore brush to clean up edge artifacts
- Try different background colors: Sometimes artifacts are only visible against certain backgrounds; adding a slight feather to the edge can help
- Re-process at different settings: Upload a cropped version of the image (tighter crop around the subject) for potentially better edge detection
My batch processing failed partway through. What happened?
Common causes for batch processing failures:
- File format issues: Ensure all files in the batch are supported formats (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP)
- File size limits: Individual files exceeding 50 MB may cause processing errors
- Corrupted files: One corrupted file can halt a batch — remove problematic files and retry
- Browser timeout: Long batches on slower connections may timeout — try processing in smaller sub-batches
- Session timeout: Ensure you remain logged in during processing
Can I undo AI enhancements?
Yes. Fotor maintains a non-destructive editing workflow:
- Undo button: Revert the most recent operation
- History panel: Step back through multiple editing operations
- Original comparison: Toggle between original and edited versions
- Reset: Return to the original uploaded image at any time
Your original file is never modified — all edits are applied as a separate layer.
