Quick answer
Google Analytics benchmarking compares supported property metrics with anonymized peer groups. It shows a peer median and a 25th-to-75th-percentile range. Google’s August 10, 2026 announcement adds an Ask Advisor workflow for digging into campaign performance against anonymized averages from similar businesses.
Use the result as a directional comparison, not a causal diagnosis or performance target. Confirm the peer group, metric formula, date range, data thresholds, account setting, property data quality, and campaign scope before drawing a conclusion. Ask Advisor can help form questions and locate reports, but it processes one property and cannot remove differences between businesses.
How Analytics benchmarks work
Google groups properties using industry information and signals such as property URLs and app attributes. Benchmarking supports both normalized metrics, such as ratios, and unnormalized metrics, such as total revenue or active users.
For many absolute metrics, Google estimates a range using the peer group’s normalized metric and the selected property’s active-user count. Google documents Active users as an exception that uses actual peer counts. This estimation method is important: an absolute-number comparison may not be a direct aggregation of same-sized companies.
The benchmark view can show:
- the property’s trendline;
- the peer-group median; and
- a shaded range from the 25th to the 75th percentile.
Google says benchmarking data is refreshed every 24 hours and protected through aggregation, encryption, and thresholds. These protections do not make a displayed cohort an exact competitive set.
Eligibility and availability checks
Before asking Advisor to interpret a benchmark, confirm:
- Account setting: Modeling contributions & business insights is enabled in Account Settings.
- Peer group: the selected industry and subcategory represent the intended comparison.
- Metric support: the card supports benchmarking; custom metrics and some other metrics are unavailable.
- Date range: benchmarking is unavailable for “today” and is documented from May 30, 2024 onward.
- Data volume: the property and peer group meet Google’s thresholds for users and meaningful data.
- Property scope: Ask Advisor is eligible, the property language is English, and the question stays within that property.
- Campaign mapping: campaign names, source/medium, cost imports, conversions, attribution, and linked-product data are reconciled.
An absent benchmark can be an eligibility, setting, metric, date, or threshold issue. It is not automatically evidence that the property has no peers.
A safe Advisor prompt sequence
Establish the observed comparison
Ask for the metric, property value, peer median, percentile range, selected peer group, date range, and report location. Keep this step descriptive.
Check sensitivity
Repeat the comparison with a matched period, an approved alternative peer subgroup, and an adjacent metric. Note any conclusion that disappears when the peer definition or period changes.
Investigate property-level drivers
Ask Advisor to break the selected property’s movement down by supported dimensions and link to the underlying report. Verify those rows and filters directly.
Add campaign evidence
If the decision concerns paid media, reconcile the Analytics view with the relevant Google Ads report, change history, and experiment record. Do not treat a peer difference as proof that a particular campaign or setting caused the gap.
Define the next test
Turn the comparison into a bounded hypothesis with owner, primary metric, guardrails, sample or time window, and review date. The benchmark can help prioritize a question; it cannot validate the answer in advance.
Interpretation table
| Observation | Supported conclusion | Unsupported leap |
|---|---|---|
| Property is below the 25th percentile | The selected metric is below the displayed peer range for this setup and period | The campaign is failing because of one named cause |
| Property is above the median | The property exceeds the displayed peer median | The business is more profitable or better run |
| Absolute revenue range is higher | The estimate for the selected peer group and traffic scale is higher | Direct competitors reported those exact revenue totals |
| Benchmark changed after peer selection | The comparison is sensitive to cohort definition | One peer group is objectively correct for every decision |
| Advisor names a driver | The property contains a pattern worth checking | The driver is causal or the proposed action will improve results |
Privacy and governance boundary
Google documents benchmark data as aggregated and subject to thresholds. Separately, Analytics Help says Ask Advisor chat activity may be used to improve the product and is governed by Google’s terms, AI use policy, and privacy policy. Review both surfaces under the organization’s data-handling policy.
Do not paste unnecessary personal data, confidential forecasts, unpublished commercial terms, or regulated fields into the conversation. Preserve only the evidence needed for the decision and control access to exported reports or notifications.
Frequently asked questions
What does Google Analytics benchmarking compare?
It compares an Analytics property’s supported metrics with aggregated peer-group benchmarks, including the peer median and a range from the 25th to the 75th percentile.
Does a benchmark show why a campaign is above or below peers?
No. A benchmark provides directional comparative context. It does not control for product, margin, market, channel mix, measurement quality, seasonality, campaign design, or other causes.
What is required to see Analytics benchmarks?
Google documents the Modeling contributions & business insights account setting as a prerequisite. Availability also depends on supported metrics, data thresholds, sufficient meaningful data, peer-group coverage, and a date range other than today.
Can Ask Advisor compare several Analytics properties?
Google Analytics Help says Ask Advisor processes data solely within the selected property. A cross-property benchmark or portfolio analysis requires a separate governed workflow.
